The world can be a tough place when you are unwell and dealing with mental illness, or you’re impacted by trauma of homelessness or family violence, and facing complex personal issues.
It can be even more challenging if you are trying to deal with the stress and complexity of courts and the legal systems.
Each year, hundreds of vulnerable or disadvantaged Western Australians look to us for expert advice and representation in the legal system, and for expert social services support and guidance.

We support thousands of people every year – ensuring vulnerable people, and particularly people experiencing mental illness or impacted by the trauma of family violence, receive high-quality advice, advocacy and legal representation.
Sophie’s Story
Sophie contacted Ruah Legal Services whilst on a Community Treatment Order (CTO). She was unhappy with her diagnosis of Schizophrenia and the prescribed medication for that diagnosis. Sophie was scheduled to appear before the Mental Health Tribunal for a review of her CTO and sought representation.
Alex’s Story
Alex contacted Ruah Legal Services at a time when their Guardianship and Administration Orders were due for review. Alex was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had been the subject of a Guardianship Order and Administration Order for over a year.
Leo’s Story
Leo is a 54-year-old man with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder who has spent many years of his life in the mental health system but has no criminal history. Leo was referred to Ruah Legal Services when he was an inpatient at a mental health ward. He had been charged with stealing.
